Escaping a City
Oslo is where my family and I started in Norway, although my Norwegian partner is not strictly from there. It was a perfect place to begin, being from London. A soft landing. All the things as I get closer to 50 that I could ask for from a city. Less people, less complexity, clean, transport that works really well. Good jobs market in IT. Crime levels manageable. Weather, sure its colder but you get to Ski, ice skate and hike. So many positives, but in the end its just another lonely city where people try to buy comfort and career is king. I genuinely love Oslo but it was time to leave and there is so much more life out here in Norway to enjoy.
First thing to do is to learn to do nothing. City people need to be entertained constantly. Always looking for external stimulus. Restaurants, concerts, bands on the street etc. Norway is a quiet place. I have learnt to love the quiet, the woods, the sea. Limited shopping experiences, mediocre night life. You get by! You learn to love other things.
